Fresh From The Painting Table

I've just finished a 12 figure unit of the these Minifig S Range Sudanese archers for the Apocryphal Well scrimmage. The figures are based on illos in Funcken and I've copied the painting scheme from that source. The colours put me in mind of those portraits of African women elderly Northern aunts used to buy from Woolworths in the 1960s to decorate the front parlour.

  1. Very nice chaps, but your memory is different from mine - surely the women had a strong purple hue? Or was that just in the North-West?

    1. You're thinking of the famous Blue Lady print of a painting by Trechikoff ("The King of Kitsch"). The same chap did a series of pictures of African women with fruit bowls and the like. I seem to think there were also vases, lampstands etc. I should add that on the North-West theme, the combination of leopardskin and scarlet can't help but remind some of us of Bette Lynch erstwhile barmaid of the Rovers Return.

  2. Hello Harry,
I remember this figure in Derek Sharman's Persian army from the 70's.Derek ran a small wargames shop in Durham City at the time. The only difference was that Derek painted them as Ethiopians, one half of the body painted jet black, the other painted white. A bit like the local maggies really, and just as ineffective.
    Thanks Robbie
